For the first time in many years, the Japanese automaker Toyota has no representatives in the top-selling cars of the month.
Data from the report of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) and the Hyundai Thanh Cong Joint Venture (TC Motor) show that the Vietnamese automobile market in February 2024 continued to decline significantly compared to the previous month. Part of the reason is that February coincided with the Lunar New Year holiday, reducing the demand for car purchases.
In the top-selling cars of the past February, the most notable thing was the "disappearance" of the Toyota brand. This is a major surprise as the Japanese automaker often leads the sales figures of the entire market and typically has 2-3 models in the top 10 best-selling cars. For example, in December 2023, the Toyota Vios topped the entire market, the Toyota Veloz Cross ranked seventh, and the Toyota Yaris Cross ranked eighth in the top 10 best-selling cars. Overall in 2023, the Toyota Vios ranked fifth and the Corolla Cross ranked eighth in the top 10 best-selling cars of the year. In January 2024, the Toyota Vios dropped to seventh place.
In addition to the "disappearance" of the Toyota Vios, another model that had to step out of the top 10 was the KIA Seltos, yielding the last two positions of the ranking to the KIA Carnival and the Hyundai Grand i10 in the top-selling cars of February 2024.
Here are the details of the top 10 best-selling models in February 2024:
1/ Ford Ranger: 880 units
Despite a significant decrease in sales by 23% compared to January 2024 (1,143 units), the "king of pickups" still rose one position to the top spot in the top 10 best-selling cars in the market in February. Cumulatively for the first two months of the year, Ford Vietnam sold 2,023 units of the Ranger and led the entire market.
The 2023 Ford Ranger is assembled domestically with 6 versions including XL, XLS MT, XLS 2x4 AT, XLS 4x4 AT, XLT, and Wildtrak. The prices of these versions range from 659 to 965 million VND. The highest-end model, the Ranger Raptor, is imported from Thailand and sold at 1.299 billion VND.
2/ Mitsubishi Xpander: 641 units
The best-selling model in the Vietnamese market in 2023 and January 2024, the Mitsubishi Xpander, lost its number one position to the Ford Ranger by achieving sales of 641 units in February, halving its sales compared to the previous month (1,285 units). The cumulative sales for the first two months of the year for the Xpander reached 1,926 units.
The upgraded version of the Mitsubishi Xpander has been available since June 2022, distributed in 4 versions: MT, AT, AT Premium, and Xpander Cross, all equipped with a 1.5L engine. The prices for the 2022 Xpander range from 555 million VND, with the newly launched Xpander Cross at the end of February 2023 priced at the highest at 698 million VND.
3/ Honda City: 640 units
Honda City is the only name in the top 10 with a positive sales growth in the past month. The Honda B-segment sedan achieved sales of 640 units, a 33% increase compared to January (482 units), while also jumping 7 positions to third place. In total, Honda City sold 1,122 units in the first two months of 2024.
The current Honda City is the version introduced in 2021, using a 1.5L engine combined with a CVT automatic transmission. This B-segment sedan is introduced in 4 versions: E, G, L, and RS with prices ranging from 499 to 609 million VND. The good sales in February were partly explained by the 100% registration fee support and a 30 million VND discount from the Japanese automaker for City models with 2023 VIN numbers.
4/ Mazda CX-5: 600 units
Mazda's crossover model in Vietnam also only sold 600 units in February, a 26% decrease compared to January (807 units), maintaining its fourth position in the top 10. The cumulative sales for the first two months of 2024 for the Mazda CX-5 reached 1,407 units.
In early July 2023, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 was refreshed with 3 main versions: Deluxe, Luxury, and Premium priced at 749 million, 789 million, and 829 million VND respectively. Among them, the Premium version has two optional packages: Sport (additional 20 million VND) or Exclusive (additional 40 million VND).
5/ KIA Sonet: 428 units
The KIA Sonet climbed 2 positions in the top 10 best-selling cars, reaching fifth place despite its unimpressive sales. The small KIA model sold 428 units in the past February, a 40% decrease compared to January (710 units). The cumulative sales for the first two months of the year for the KIA Sonet reached 1,138 units.
The KIA Sonet was introduced by Thaco KIA at the end of 2021 and has had fairly good sales since then. Currently, the Sonet is assembled domestically in 4 versions, including 1 manual and 3 automatic versions, with prices ranging from 499 to 609 million VND.
6/ Hyundai Accent: 365 units
Hyundai's sedan model achieved sales of 365 units in February, a 60% decrease compared to January (919 units). This poor sales performance caused the Accent to drop 3 positions to sixth place compared to the previous month. In total, 1,281 units of the Hyundai Accent were sold in the first two months of 2024, leading the B-segment sedan market.
The Hyundai Accent is currently assembled and distributed by the Hyundai Thanh Cong Joint Venture in 4 versions, using a 1.4L engine paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The prices for the Accent range from 426 to 542 million VND.
7/ Ford Everest: 351 units
The Ford Everest continued to be in the top 10 but this time in seventh place, dropping one position compared to the previous month. The sales in the past month reached only 351 units, a 55% decrease compared to January (785 units). Cumulatively in 2024, Ford Vietnam has sold a total of 1,136 Ford Everests, leading the D-segment SUV market.
The Ford Everest was refreshed in July 2022 and is currently available in 5 versions with prices ranging from 1,099 to 1,499 billion VND. The engines for the Ambiente, Sport, and Titanium versions are the 2.0-liter single-turbo Diesel I4, while the top two versions, Everest Titanium+ and Wildtrack, use the 2.0L Bi-Turbo diesel engine.
8/ Honda HR-V: 282 units

The Honda HR-V is being introduced in the Vietnamese market with 3 versions: RS priced at 871 million VND, L priced at 826 million VND, and the budget G version priced at 699 million VND. Honda is currently offering a 50% registration fee support for this B-SUV model in February 2024.
9/ KIA Carnival: 268 units
Compared to the 339 units sold in January, the KIA Carnival decreased by 21%, but the large-sized MPV from KIA still made it into the top 10 best-selling cars in the market in ninth place. In the first two months of 2024, 607 units of the Carnival were sold in Vietnam.
The Kia Carnival currently has 5 versions with listed prices ranging from 1,199 to 1,839 billion VND. All versions of the KIA Carnival are equipped with a 3.5L V6 engine producing 290 horsepower, along with front-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
10/ Hyundai Grand i10: 263 units
With 263 units sold in February, sales of the Hyundai Grand i10 decreased by 45% compared to January (480 units) but were sufficient to place the Hyundai A-segment car in the top 10. The cumulative sales of the Grand i10 from the beginning of the year until now are 743 units, leading the A-segment car market.
The Hyundai Grand i10 is the most urban-oriented model with 6 versions for both sedan and hatchback variants. The car is equipped with a 1.2L engine with options for a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The listed prices range from 360 to 455 million VND.
